A re-manufactured diesel engine cylinder head often costs considerably less than a new casting and most heads are able to be reworked multiple times.
Beginning when a core comes into the shop, we grade it making sure that the head is a workable core and an OEM casting... we want to make sure we start with the highest quality raw materials. Grading consists of checking the cylinder head with a micrometer to make sure the head is thick enough for re-manufacturing as well as a magnetic (magnaflux) inspection for cracks. IF the head receives a passing grade, then we tear down the head, removing the valves, guides, springs, freeze plugs, etc... Non-cracked heads are sent back to machining... heads with cracks are sent to welding. Welding starts with placing the head on a table made and surrounded with fire bricks. Heads are then pre-heated to a predetermined temperature depending on the head. Once the head reaches the desired temperature, damaged sections of the cylinder head are removed and cast iron rods are fused into the damaged area. Then the head moves to the pre-mill where the weld is knocked down a bit before being sent to machining for drilling, cutting, new freeze plugs, etc... Then the head goes through a prolonged pressure test where it must meet strict quality control standards before being sent to the final mill where the head is cut down and polished to a brilliant finish. The head is then sent to assembly where it goes through another quality control process before it is boxed up and put on a shelf ready to ship. Dual milling processes, a precise machine shop, pressure testing, and a strict quality control process ensures that our re-manufactured cylinder heads are machined to exact factory OEM specifications.
The best way to identify the head is by using the casting number. We cannot cross reference VIN numbers. We CAN cross reference engine serial numbers for Caterpillar, Cummins and Detroit... We CANNOT cross reference engine serial numbers for MACK and International. If you have any trouble identifying the head or have any questions, please give our knowledgeable staff a call at 865.282.3206
It is our goal to keep R&R lead times to under 10 days... our target is 7 days. Turn around times vary depending on the extent of damage to the head.
OEM Cores returned must be in a "workable" condition... this means that if a core is too thin to be re-manufactured or if it's cracked beyond repair, then it will be denied. Cores are graded because we have an aggressive quality control process, we do not want to send "iffy" heads back into the market. If your core is damaged, please give one of our knowledgeable sales team members a call and we'll work something out... 865.282.3206
